Michael Baker’s survey team was recognized by ACEC Pennsylvania with a 2019 Honor Award for their role in ensuring the safety of the traveling public on an Amtrak-owned commuter line during the construction of the 42-inch Atlantic Sunrise natural gas pipeline under the tracks.
Our survey team monitored track movement on a commuter line that runs from Harrisburg to Philadelphia, Pa., and a commercial side track in Mount Joy, Pa., during the pipeline’s construction. Any change in the rails' geometric alignment could pose a fatal safety risk to the trains and the passengers who use the line. The team performed a monitoring survey twice a day and reported the measurements to Amtrak personnel.
The pipeline project was designed to supply natural gas to more than seven million American homes by connecting the producing regions of northeastern Pennsylvania to markets in the Mid-Atlantic and southeastern states.
