Penn State Autonomous Vehicle Proving Ground

Pennsylvania

The City of Pittsburgh and the Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute at Penn State University was designated as an Automated Vehicle Proving Ground by the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT), one of 10 selected sites across the country. The one-mile oval track features a vehicle handling area and a durability-testing course.

Michael Baker is providing the services for deploying the supporting infrastructure and technology at the University’s Larson Transportation Institute Test Track. Michael Baker supported the successful grant application on behalf of the client to write the Concept of Operations document and eventually guide the deployment of the technologies.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), the 10 proving ground designations “will foster innovations that can safely transform personal and commercial mobility, expand capacity, and open new doors to disadvantaged people and communities.”

Innovation

“After being selected as one of the nation’s 10 Automated Vehicle Proving Grounds, Penn State University has embarked on making the Larson Transportation Institute a premier facility for the research, development and testing of advanced transportation technologies.”
